GILLETTE, Wyo. — Campbell County may have been one of the most expensive counties to live in at the end of 2024; however, it fell in line with the statewide average in the most recent cost of living index from the Wyoming Economic Analysis Division.

According to the EAD, the Wyoming Cost of Living Index is a biannual report produced during the second and fourth quarters of the year. It looks at price data collected in 28 cities and towns that meet the criteria for inclusion, which is then used to build the Comparative Cost of Living Index by county and estimate overall inflation rates.

For the index, the EAD gathers price data from six categories: food, housing, apparel, transportation, medical, and recreation & personal care. Based on prices in these categories, Campbell County received an index value of 100, indicating the overall cost of living there was neither more expensive nor cheaper than in any other county in Wyoming. The same value was given to Sheridan County, per the EAD.

In Campbell County, index values for each individual category varied slightly with recreation & personal care, transportation and food coming in above the statewide average. Housing and medical were both below average in terms of price while the apparel price was average.

Teton, Sublette and Laramie counties, as well as a portion of Lincoln County, all received index values above 100. The highest value of 178 was given to Teton County, reportedly indicating that it is 78% more expensive to live there compared to the rest of the state, according to the EAD.

Comparatively, all other counties received index values below 100, indicating the cost of living in each was cheaper than the rest of the state. The lowest was Goshen County, which received an index value of 84, the EAD says.
