Rep. Maxwell Frost urged President Biden to grant loan relief after the Supreme Court struck down the Student Debt Relief Plan. Nonetheless, the Biden administration is already pursuing alternatives to enact student loan forgiveness.Democratic Representative Maxwell Frost, the youngest member of the House of Representatives, urged the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden to immediately grant relief to student loan borrowers. This initiative was made after the Supreme Court blocked the Student Debt Relief Plan which intends to cancel up to $20,000 in student loans for borrowers who earn less than $125,000.
According to Poff, the administration of Biden is already pursuing some alternatives to implement the Student Debt Relief Plan. The alternatives included issuing a rule under the Higher Education Act last week. Reports say the Department of Education announced that it will implement a Student Debt Relief Plan for more than 800,000 borrowers through an amendment of an income-driven repayment program.
Student Debt Relief Plan Alternatives
According to Edelman, Frost was one of the many who spoke during a virtual hearing yesterday, July 18. Frost stated that his office engaged constituents through consistent door-to-door campaigns to make the Student Debt Relief Plan one of the most relevant concerns. Other speakers also urged the Education Department to advance with alternative means to implement the Student Debt Relief Plan.
