The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a food assistance program by the U.S. federal government. It intends to help families with low incomes to afford to purchase groceries every month. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has informed on its website that households that receive SNAP benefits along with the Social Security benefits may experience a decrease in their SNAP benefits starting last month. This is because SNAP is based on income and the increase in Social Security benefits may push families into a higher income bracket.

According to Lucas, the USDA roughly calculates that 47% of the households that receive SNAP benefits also receive Social Security benefits. This percentage amounts to 126,740 households likely experiencing a decrease in their SNAP benefits. The Georgia Department of Human Services spokesperson stated that the decrease would amount to $38 for each household. Unfortunately, some households may even be pushed beyond the income limit and no longer be eligible at all.

According to Paul, the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits have increased by 8.7% this 2023. This 8.7% increase is a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for around 70 million of Americans. Beginning in January, more than 65 million Social Security beneficiaries have experienced this increase. In December 2022, more than 7 million SSI beneficiaries have also seen the increase.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that its beneficiaries will receive an increase in their benefits due to the rising inflation. In almost 40 years, the inflation has been at its highest rate. The average Social Security benefit has reportedly increased to $1,827 per month from $1,681 per month in 2022.
