This year, the Social Security disability benefits have increased to a maximum of $3,627 per month compared to the maximum of $3,345 per month in 2022. Basically, most beneficiaries are authorized to claim the Social Security disability benefits for $1,000 to $1,500 only per month. However, it is possible to be able to receive more if the beneficiary was a high earner before they became disabled. This is because a high-earning beneficiary would have contributed more to the Social Security in the first place.

According to Hartill, the Social Security Administration (SSA) works like an insurance company. This means that a beneficiary pays contributions to the SSA through their payroll taxes during the course of their working career. Once they retire or become disabled, then they may be able to collect the benefits owed to them.

What disabilities qualify for the benefits?

According to Swenson, many medical conditions can qualify as disabilities. That being said, these disabilities must reach the extent that they prevent the beneficiary from successfully finishing work-related tasks. The disabilities of the beneficiaries are also expected to remain severe in the future. In other words, the SSA considers a beneficiary disabled if their medical condition limits their activities of standing, sitting, walking, lifting, or even remembering.

Medical conditions that could be considered as a disability include:

  • Cancer
  • Congenital disorders affecting multiple body systems
  • Digestive disorders
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Genitourinary disorders
  • Hematological disorders
  • Immune system disorders
  • Mental disorders
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Neurological disorders
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Sense and speech impairments
  • Skin disorders

Furthermore, although there are several different medical conditions that could be considered as a disability, SSA says that the medical condition must impact a beneficiary’s ability to work effectively and last for a period of time to be eligible.
