On February 1, a surveillance video showed a man entering through the front door of the Schneerson Jewish Center in Richmond District during study hours. Said man allegedly wielded his gun and shot several rounds of blank ammunition. The man was then identified as Dmitri Mishin, 51. Members of the Schneerson Jewish Center are reportedly still processing the shooting incident that happened last Wednesday. Matthew Finkelstein says that people inside the synagogue have become paralyzed with fear.

According to Cina, another member of the Schneerson Jewish Center, Rabbi Chanukov, claimed that the incident was a hate crime. Chanukov stated that he saw Mishin approach and asked him if he spoke Russian. Reportedly, Mishin answered yes so Chanukov invited him to come join them. However, Mishin reportedly told Chanukov to say hello to Mossad for him. Chanukov interpreted this as Mishin’s way of harming Mossad by scaring the Jews at the synagogue. Other members, who wanted to remain unidentified, also stated that they heard Mishin saying he was going to show them something.

Not An Isolated Case

According to Villalba, Mishin was also connected with another threatening incident on January 31. The San Francisco Police Department stated that at around 8 p.m., Mishin entered a theater on Balboa Street and wielded a gun. However, after that incident, he immediately fled the scene where no one was fortunately injured.

On February 3, at around 5 p.m., the San Francisco Police eventually detained Mishin without incident in the city’s Richmond District. A search warrant was acquired by the investigators to search Mishin’s residence. Upon searching, the police discovered evidence related to the Jewish synagogue shooting. They also found evidence related to a separate incident that happened at the theater. These pieces of evidence gave probable cause for Mishin to be arrested.
