On December 19, 2022, the White House has announced U.S. President Joe Biden’s plans on extending the American Rescue Plan. This initiative aims to reduce homelessness by at least 25% in two years. This means that over 100,000 Americans who are currently living in the streets, under the bridges, in abandoned buildings, or in any temporary shelters they call their own are intended to be helped by this program. According to World Population Review, over half a million people are homeless in the U.S.

What is American Rescue Plan

The American Rescue Plan was approved in 2021 shortly after Biden became the U.S. president. The program provided billions of dollars to Americans who are in need of rental assistance. At present, the federal government aims to extend the American Rescue Plan not to provide only affordable housing. This program also aims to provide access to support, services, and income for homeless people to prosper. This plan will be implemented on the state governments and will help state leaders reduce homelessness.

Aside from having no access to a shelter of their own, homeless people also have little to no access to healthcare. This causes higher rates of illnesses like hypertension, asthma, tuberculosis, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council said that homeless people die 12 years earlier than the general population, as reported by George.
