Chicago is offering $500 worth of relief payments to 25,500 eligible residents across the city. These one-time payments will be under the newly launched assistance program announced earlier this year as “Chicago Resiliency Fund 2.0”. This assistance program is said to aim to provide economic support and cash assistance to the residents of Chicago who may have been neglected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The fund is intended to support residents who had difficulty accessing and qualifying for federal relief payments in 2020, including COVID-19 Relief Funds,” the City of Chicago website reads.

According to Heim, the in charge of the cash assistance applications are two organizations from Chicago, namely The Association House Chicago and the Chinese Mutual Aid Foundation. Eligible residents have to submit an online application and only one application per household is allowed to enter. Recipients of this bonus will then be chosen through a lottery. More than 4,000 residents are expected to win and upon winning, the residents must show proof of eligibility.

Who is eligible for this holiday bonus?

To be eligible for this holiday bonus, one must reside in the city of Chicago, be 18 years of age or older, have a household income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), have filed taxes in 2019, and claimed a dependent of 17 years or older. The first round of applications will end on December 9, but another opportunity will open by the end of December. Earlier this 2022, the city also launched a monthly assistance program for low-income households that is separate from the one-time relief payment this Christmas. This series of anti-poverty schemes was the initiative of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot who seeks a possible re-election in 2023, as reported by NBC Chicago.
