Given the growing likelihood that many Americans may get a fourth stimulus check, state governments are searching for ways to assist their residents.

Child Tax Credit on September 15

In a recently published article in CNET, while another stimulus check is unlikely this year, millions of parents will get a monthly cash payment as part of this year’s increased child tax credit on September 15. In addition, under the American Rescue Plan, families may be eligible for a $1,400 stimulus payment for a newly qualified dependent, although that money is unlikely to come until after taxes are filed next year.

Meanwhile, the IRS continues to issue “plus-up” payments for overdue stimulus funds, as well as tax return money on 2020 unemployment benefits. With Congress’s attention focused on the $1 trillion infrastructure plan and the $3.5 trillion federal budget package, a fourth economic impact payment is unlikely to be enacted in 2021.

States that are Distributing Stimulus Checks

California

As of yet, California is the only state that has issued a stimulus check from its own funds in the form of the Golden State Stimulus, owing to its tax system’s budget surplus. Residents earning between $30,000 and $75,000 per year are eligible for $500 or $600, as well as $500 for families with dependent children.

Colorado

Between March 15, 2020, and October 24, 2020, those who received at least one unemployment benefit will get $375. Those with higher salaries who get more than 500 per week in work benefits, however, will be ineligible.

Maryland

All state and municipal taxes on unemployment benefits have been abolished, and the law also included stimulus payments of $500 for families and $300 for individuals who applied for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

New Mexico

The state initiative intends to give $5 million to people who did not qualify for federal assistance.

Florida

Although things are still in the works, most teachers and administrators will get a $1,000 stipend.

Georgia

Georgia’s proposal is substantial, with full-time teachers and administrators receiving $1,000 and part-time instructors receiving $500. Pre-K instructors will very certainly be eligible for reimbursement.

Michigan

Teachers in Michigan have received $500 hazard pay bonuses.

New York

There is a 2.1 billion dollar fund in New York for illegal employees who were unable to get financial assistance under the federal stimulus. You must be a resident of the state and have earned less than 26,208 dollars in 2020 to be eligible.

Tennessee

Instructors will get $1,000 hazard pay bonuses checks, while part-time teachers will receive 500 dollar checks.

Texas

Nothing has been confirmed for the rest of the state, but Fort Worth and Arlington will raise district employee compensation by 4 percent. Denton and Mansfile will raise salaries by 2 percent, with Denton workers receiving a $500 bonus. Staff who return to the classroom in September in Irving will get a 2,000 dollar reward.

Meanwhile, it’s been a few months since House and Senate Democrats pushed for another stimulus package. A number of senators requested that Biden add recurring stimulus payments in his next stimulus plan in late March.

A similar request was made by many members of the House Ways and Means Committee in May. They observed that “most individuals spent relief cheques on monthly expenditures or necessities such as food, electricity, rent, and mortgage payments,” citing increasing poverty and spiraling debt among Americans.
