The Biden administration has announced that more than $500 million in funds will be made available to help low-income Americans with their heating and cooling bills through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

This additional funding is in addition to the $1 billion awarded last month to provide crisis assistance and weatherization services to make homes more energy-efficient.
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income households with their energy bills, especially during the extreme weather conditions. The funds can also be used to help communities prepare for unexpected weather events like noreasters and heat waves.
According to Lanikque Howard, Director of the Office of Community Service, LIHEAP makes home energy more affordable for individuals who may be struggling to make ends meet. Last year, the program helped more than six million households across the United States. However, despite this, there are still many eligible households that may not receive help due to a lack of funding.

LIHEAP as Source of Additional Funds
Howard added that the additional funds will provide a bit of breathing room for families who are struggling to pay their bills. She also believes that the administration and Congress will continue to dedicate resources to the program to help more eligible households.

These funds not only help to reduce energy bills but also make homes more energy-efficient, which is crucial in reducing overall energy consumption.
