From 2017 to 2022, the Duke Energy Company in North Carolina rewarded its customers for installing solar panels in accordance with a state program. Duke Energy issued $4,000 worth of energy tax rebates to homeowners and $30,000 for business owners. The budget for these tax rebates came from a $62 million worth of payout scheme. This scheme was supposed to end last summer, but Duke Energy dragged the payments out until this month.

According to Boraks, for the last batch of payments, Duke Energy issued a total of $1.3 million via a random lottery. The tax rebates were issued to almost 356 customers who are mostly owners of residential properties. That being said, there are still 2,900 customers who are expecting to receive their tax rebates. Unfortunately, Duke Energy announced that they have no plans on issuing more tax rebates anymore.

Ways to Reduce Energy Bills Other Than Solar Panels

According to Lawley, there are other ways homeowners can reduce their energy bills aside from using solar panels. Most homeowners could actually save money by simply unplugging some appliances whenever they are not being used.

These appliances are called “vampire appliances” because they consume “phantom loads” when plugged in while not in use. This means that these appliances suck up energy even without being directly used. These appliances include a television, computer, kitchen appliances on the counter, and even chargers. By simply unplugging these appliances, one could reportedly save up to $165 in their energy bills annually.
