According to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in its blog on December 5, 2022, SSI recipients are receiving two payments this month because the first day of January falls on a national holiday, New Year’s Day. The SSA issues check on the business day prior to months that begin on a weekend or holiday to ensure that beneficiaries receive them by the first of the month.

The SSA also added that the payment being Issued on December 30th will be slightly higher than the payment issued on December 1st, which was worth $841. Normally, SSI recipients receive one payment per month for a total of 12 payments per year. In 2023, SSI recipients will receive two payments in the same month in April, June, September, and December because the first of those months falls on a weekend or holiday.

According to Asher Notheis of the Washington Examiner on December 15, 2022, the SSA is making additional payments in 2023 to ensure that SSI recipients receive one payment per month. The payment schedule is being adjusted to accommodate national holidays and weekends, allowing beneficiaries to consistently access their monthly payments.
