In the northern part of New York, a hospital will pause the delivery of babies later this September. This is partly due to employee resignations over a mandate of mandatory COVID-19 inoculation.

Last week, six maternity staff members quit Lewis County General Hospital. Thus, this aggravates a pre-existing shortage in manpower which is a dilemma faced by several health care systems,

This scenario also highlights vaccine dubiousness among a number of health care workers. According to Gerald Cayer, chief executive officer of Lewis County Health System, on Friday, “The math is just not working. The number of resignations received leaves us no choice but to pause delivering babies.”

Mandate for Vaccination

The state of New York is necessitating health care workers to be inoculated by September 27. Cayer also stated seven more workers had yet to make a choice regarding their employment.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared all long-term care facilities and hospital workers should have been administered at least one dose of a vaccine for the novel coronavirus by the said date.

The hospital is situated 300 miles north of NYC. It was grappling to remain sufficiently staffed prior to the guideline. According to Cayer, “If we can pause the service and now focus on recruiting nurses who are vaccinated, we will be able to reengage in delivering babies here in Lewis County.”

On August 23, the vaccine mandate commenced being implemented for health care workers. Cayer remarked 30 workers have tendered their resignation. Twenty of them had clinical roles including therapists, nurses, and technicians

Twenty-seven percent of the hospital workers are yet to be inoculated, said Cayer. He added 165 employees overall in Lewis County Health System have not yet received the vaccine shot.

Cayer hopes that the NY Department of Health will coordinate with them in temporarily halting the service instead of closing the maternity department.
