Fundraiser Honoring Late Illinois Union Leader Draws Prominent Labor Figures

According to Illinois, House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch is in Washington, D.C., to raise money from organized labor. The event is happening alongside the North America’s Building Trades Unions 2024 conference. Chris Welch hopes to get donations ranging from $1,000 to $68,500 per election cycle. This event also honors the late Ed Smith, a prominent Illinois union leader.

The fundraiser has big names from labor groups like Eric Dean and Tim Drea. Chris Welch’s committee, People for Emanuel Chris Welch, has over $7 million in cash as of March 31. Some Illinois House members, like Rep. Marcus Evans and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, will attend too.
