This afternoon, New Mexico will experience calm conditions with a slight breeze for most areas. However, a weak winter storm is moving through the state, bringing light snow to the Northern Mountains later this evening.
A low-pressure system is tracking across New Mexico today, and by evening, it will be centered over the Northern Mountains. This will bring light snowfall through tonight and into tomorrow morning. Roadway impacts are expected to be minimal, though Raton Pass may see some disruption. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas surrounding the pass from 2 p.m. today until 5 a.m. Tuesday, December 10th. Snow accumulations of up to 5 inches are possible in this region.
Along with the winter weather, the system is also pushing a cold front through New Mexico. As of this morning, the front is positioned over the Four Corners region, and it will continue to move south throughout the day. This front is causing wind gusts across the state, and tomorrow, the cold air it brings will cause temperatures to drop by 10-15 degrees. Wednesday morning is expected to bring some of the coldest temperatures of the season.
Fortunately, the winter storm will be short-lived. The low-pressure system will exit the state on Tuesday, taking the snow with it. Temperatures will start to warm up again by Thursday.
